Labor has deftly plucked the low-hanging policy fruit, but tougher challenges lie in store in the new year - including higher interest rates and energy prices.

With just under two weeks to go before the May 21 election, Scott Morrison was feeling bruised.had been central to Labor’s strategy to win government and, as the attacks reached their crescendo during the campaign, Morrison’s thick hide was finally pierced.

A few days later, flying from Melbourne to Adelaide, Morrison acknowledged the attack had gotten to him. He and Clare, who holds the south-western Sydney electorate of Blaxland, had forged a friendship in their early years. It was the narrowest of victories, achieved with just 32.6 per cent of the primary vote, Labor’s lowest since 1934. A, driven by antipathy towards Morrison and a worship of Labor Premier Mark McGowan, pushed Labor’s national seat count to 77, one more than the bare minimum 76.

“In our polling, Scott Morrison’s net competence score fell by 14 points in two weeks between late June and early July. By September, Morrison was in a neutral position on a measure that had been his core strength throughout 2020 and the prospect of a 2021 federal election was all but gone,” he said.

According to Albanese and his senior strategists, the surge in support has been built on governing, and governing well. Aided by the most-government-friendly Senate in a decade,This includes new climate change targets, a National Anti-Corruption Commission and more money for child care. It also convened a jobs summit in September, as cover for a planned overhaul of industrial relations.
