Labor leader Chris Minns rules out any more sales of public assets as he says privatisation has failed to keep prices low.

Labor leader Chris Minns will push to bring energy supply back into public hands, similar to the plan for a State Electricity Commission proposed in Victoria, as NSW’s chief scientist warns supply shortages will no longer be restricted to the summer months.

The opposition leader was in Perth on Tuesday, where he met Labor Premier Mark McGowan for briefings on the state’s domestic train manufacturing industry, as well as discussions on energy policy.Minns is also looking at ways to establish a public energy company such as CleanCo in Queensland, which is a government-owned renewable energy company, or the proposed State Electricity Commission in Victoria.

The October federal budget forecast a 56 per cent spike in power bills in the coming year, and NSW parliament has been recalled from its summer break on Wednesday to pass emergency laws to put a temporary cap on coal prices, which has the support of Labor.Asked on Tuesday whether NSW Labor would follow Western Australia’s lead in implementing reservation policies to drive down energy costs, Minns said: “We’re looking at it very closely.

“As the power system becomes more complex and interdependent there is the potential for cascading failures to occur.”
