A youth soccer coach who was suspended in England for throwing a banana at a black player is working for the Whitecaps.
A coach presently working for the Vancouver Whitecaps’ West Kootenay academy in Nelson left his previous job in England while being investigated for racism.
Another youth team coach, Lee Broster, made comments about his younger black players listening to rap music — “No wonder you black lads always go around stabbing people” — as well as turning the lights out in the dressing room and then saying “make sure you black lads smile so I can see you.” Within six months, Adams was a continent away, having been hired as a youth coach by the Whitecaps, working with the Nelson-based academy and the Nelson Soccer Association.
The Whitecaps didn’t learn of Adams’ situation until 2015, when the Football Association — which oversees soccer in England and Wales — suspended Adams for six months, imposed a fine and ordered him to take an education program as a result of its own investigation.
