When confronted with allegations against the coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s team and the national U-20 team in 2008, the Whitecaps and the Canadian Soccer Association had one job.

Whether or not that investigation became public isn’t the issue. The issue is the Caps and the CSA had to be seen, either in real time or after the fact, doing everything in their power to expose the truth. If you’ve just joined us, the Whitecaps and CSA are now in the eye of a storm over a situation that took place more than a decade ago.

It would take some time — which is irrelevant in this case — but the players’ voices would be heard. The loudest belongs to former Whitecaps’ women player Ciara McCormack who, in a blog post in late February, detailed the events leading up to the appointment of the ombudsperson. They are the victims here, not the coach, the Whitecaps or the CSA. They deserve the support and admiration of all soccer fans. The women’s World Cup is set for France in a couple of months and the women’s game is taking centre stage. As a result, The Guardian, one of the most influential papers in the world, has taken an interest in this story as have other outlets in the U.K. and FIFPro, the players’ worldwide representative body, have also called for further investigation.
