Putting up the Christmas tree is a timeless tradition, but one option is better for the environment.
Each year, tens of millions of trees are chopped down, placed in living rooms around the world and decorated in time for Christmas. A few weeks later, once the festivities are over , most are tossed out.
This is because of “carbon fixation”, which is when trees convert carbon dioxide into organic matter through photosynthesis, removing it from the atmosphere. This means carbon in trees isn’t released back into the atmosphere until the wood is burnt, or it decays, which often takes years.Blanch says there are some caveats, however.
A cargo ship travelling directly from Shanghai to Sydney creates at least 630kg of carbon emissions each one-way trip, according to Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen. But Monash Sustainable Development Institute project manager Julie Boulton says the reality is most people don’t buy their trees to last that long.
Artificial trees are even worse, and are estimated to have an equivalent carbon cost of 40kg if they are discarded into landfill.
