The Coalition will refuse to support any amendment to the stage three tax cuts and accused the government of using “weasel words” to walk away from its election commitment.
The tax breaks are legislated to come into effect in 2024, but Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell has said there were “serious discussions” happening within government to alter the plan either in the October or May budgets.
When asked by Sky News Australia Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert if any amendment at all was unacceptable, Ms Ley said: “Well of course it is, these tax cuts have been legislated, they’re promised, they’re baked in”. The existing sliding tax scale sees Australians earning more than $180,000 taxed 45 cents to the dollar, and those pulling in between $120,000 and $180,000 on tax rate of 37 per cent.
Clennell said there was “no suggestion” that stage three would be dumped altogether, with Labor likely considering marginal changes to the planned cuts. “We need to make sure that spending in the budget is responsible and affordable and sustainable and sufficiently targeted to the pretty substantial challenges that we confront,” the Treasurer said.
“That’s a whole lot of weasel words and wiggle room and you can drive a truck through it and see it a mile away,” Ms Ley said.
