Osborne says government takes mental health seriously

NDP MHA Lela Evans speaks with reporters outside the House of Assembly on Tuesday, Oct. 11. -Juanita Mercer/SaltWire NetworkST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Torngat Mountains NDP MHA Lela Evans was emotional speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Oct. 11 as she called on the government to do more to address a rise in suicide rates in northern Labrador.

When SaltWire Network asked Osborne about the freight boat, he said it is not something that’s addressed by his department.“We do take mental health seriously. This government has seen huge improvements in the reduction of wait times for mental health,” he said, and spoke about the announcement on June 1 for the $7-million action plan to prevent suicide called Our Path to Resilience.“Everything is related, and the problem is the government isolates it — puts it into little, discreet categories.

“Are we not one province?” she said, adding that many of the political systems are focused on the Avalon peninsula.
