Farmers, fishermen and winemakers who have felt the brunt of $20 billion in Chinese trade sanctions and said Penny Wong’s visit to Beijing on Wednesday was a first step on a long road to restoring trust and trade.

Mitchell Taylor sent about 15 per cent of his wine exports to China before heavy trade sanctions were imposed two years ago.

“I’d love to be proved wrong,” Mr Taylor said. “Dialogue is a positive thing. We are a bit cautious, but we are also optimistic that every step taken is a good thing.”Mr Taylor is among the farmers, fishermen and winemakers who have felt the brunt of $20 billion in Chinese trade sanctions. He said’s visit to China – the first ministerial visit in three years – was a first step on a long road to restoring trust and trade.

Mr Ford said any move that strengthened economic and cultural ties between Australia and China was to be welcomed, adding: “It’s been pleasing to see recent dialogue between the leaders of the two nations, and we strongly support further diplomatic and business engagement.”Mr Taylor said distributors, wine sellers and other players in China who had been part of the $1.3 billion in annual exports had all been hurt by the heavy tariffs. “We really do feel for those Chinese businesses,” he said.

With Australia shut out, China is paying $US50–$US60 a tonne more than the rest of the world pays for its barley. The trade, built around live lobster flown into China, was worth about $750 million in 2018-19, but exports to all markets reached just $360 million in 2021-22. However, he said the meat industry’s biggest problem was finding enough labour to keep up with demand and that new free trade deals were set to make cattle and sheep producers even less reliant on China.
