You can’t avoid the media images of murder, rape, torture and kidnapping in Israel at the hands of Hamas terrorists from Gaza.Yet through all the chants and signs about driving Israelis out from the “river to the sea,” what was noticeable was there was not one mention by pro-Palestinian protesters about all of those innocent people heinously slain.Until that is, a lone woman showed up carrying the flag of Israel and determined to not let this be glossed over.
The pro-Palestine protesters also had far less attendance compared to a 2021 gathering at this same Nathan Phillips Square where there were easily five times more who came down for the cause. It seems it was not an easy sell to bring down the numbers on this Thanksgiving Monday. And Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw and his deputy chief Lauren Pogue made it very clear that no nonsense would be tolerated here and the hate crimes unit was on scene monitoring it all. The result was there was no major trouble and no known arrests.Sure, there were some heated taunts back and forth between the smattering of Israeli supporters and the larger pro-Palestinian crowd. But nothing that seemed serious. Toronto Police deserve a lot of credit for that.
