Toronto is bracing itself for what Jewish and political leaders fear could be shameful images broadcast around the world of people in Nathan Phillips Square celebrating the mass murder of innocent people in Israel. And they are calling for police to not allow a planned rally by Toronto-area pro-Palestinian groups to happen outside City Hall. Toronto Councillors Brad Bradford and James Pasternak took to X to express that they think it should not be allowed.

But as the body count rises and the world waits to see how Israel responds to the shocking attack from Hamas terrorists, they may notice there is growing unification on the point that while people are entitled to their opinions in a free society, dancing on the graves of the slain and celebrating the carnage as Toronto saw on a bridge Saturday over the Gardiner Expressway and at what has been dubbed the Gaza Plaza in Mississauga is unacceptable.

Right now in what has been dubbed by some the “Gaza Plaza” on Mississauga-Oakville border- pro Palestinian supporters are gathering to celebrate terror attack and their position in the war declared byPolice have a difficult job in instances like this where they understand people’s right to protest or support causes but must protect citizens and the law which does have hate provisions in the criminal code. It’s no easy task and all sides need to be reminded police are caught in the middle.

This time the situation is even more tense and the fear is potentially more precarious. There is nothing wrong with any group holding a sombre prayer event but there are laws that prevent supporting violence against any race or religion or supporting an identified terror group like Hamas. But leaders have put on the record their displeasure with what they have seen from the earlier celebratory gatherings supporting genocidal terrorism.
