Assistant Commissioner David Clayton from Victoria Police said there would be a zero tolerance of looting with major evacuations to take place in coming days.

He confirmed that a 71-year old man had died in Rochester in his backyard and sent his “deepest sympathies to his family and friends”.“Rochester is a proud local community, a very tight local community and they’ll all be saddened to hear of one of their number passing away,” he said. Victoria Police confirmed they were called to a High Street, Rochester property at 9.30am on Saturday, after reports a man was deceased in floodwaters inside the property’s rear garden.

The Broken River is currently at 7.36m and rising. It could exceed the major flood level of 7.90m by late Saturday morning, before peaking at 8.30m on Sunday morning.Properties along Broken River Drive to Archer Street, down to Oxbow Avenue along the southern edge of Kensington Gardens across to McPhees Rd; east to Doyles Road to Orrvale Road, and on to Prentice Rodd across Central Avenue, up to Channel Road to Jameson Road across to Boundary Road and to the East Goulburn Main Channel.

In Shepparton, a giant sandbagging machine has been transported down from Sydney. Volunteers are creating 1000 bags an hour, Rapid Relief Team leader Brent Pederick says.The queue of cars to get into the showgrounds snakes for hundreds of metres. Emergency management commissioner Andrew Crisp said on Saturday morning he believed the number of emergency alerts given to Maribyrnong residents before their homes flooded was adequate.Chris Hopkins
