Around 21 per cent of NBN users are using a 100Mbps speed or higher, Mr Rue said on Tuesday, up from 15 per cent a year ago.

NBN Co chief Stephen Rue says users are increasingly choosing faster and more expensive home internet plans, even without the implementation of planned wholesale price cuts at those levels, but the company is resisting pressure to cut the price of the popular 50Mbps download speed.

Asked if NBN Co could do more to encourage the take-up of higher speeds amid an inflation-induced cost-of-living crunch, Mr Rue said, “the pricing suggested is what it will be, as long as [the SAU] is accepted”. “The increase to the 50Mbps is not as high as the top line suggests,” Ms van Beelen said. “The price increase for our retailers on the 50mbps is actually less than [inflation].

Residential per-user revenue was up slightly from $46 to $47 per month, while the after-tax loss halved to $444 million. He highlighted the upgrade works underway with the fibre network, and the fixed wireless and satellite network for regional communities, which came under scrutiny at senate estimates on Tuesday night.
