The UK on Monday accused Beijing-backed groups of targeting 'democratic institutions and parliamentarians' in two 'malicious' cyber campaigns, unveiling sanctions and summoning China's ambassador.
In this video grab taken from footage broadcast by the UK Parliamentary Recording Unit via the Parliament TV website on March 25, 2024, Britain's Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden makes a statement on Chinese cyber attacks, in the House of Commons. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday the UK would"do what is required" to protect itself from a cyber attack by China.
Parliament's cybersecurity measures blocked a second campaign, against lawmakers, many of whom are critical of Beijing, he added. Dowden said the cyberattacks were "the latest in a clear pattern of hostile activity originating in China". The country's counter-espionage agency in Wellington said a state-backed group known as "APT40" compromised computers linked to the Parliamentary Counsel Office, which drafts and publishes laws.
