TWO of the most wanted criminals in the region were killed, while a policeman was wounded on a New Year’s Eve shootout in a west coast village in Zamboanga City , the police said Thursday, January 2, 2025.The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) said the two slain riding-in-tandem suspects were involved in drug trafficking and several violent incidents in Zamboanga City .They were killed in a shootout shortly after 6 p.m.

Tuesday, December 31, 2024, in front of Mount Carmel Parish Church at Zone 1 in Ayala village, 16 kilometers west of Zamboanga City. The ZCPO said one of the suspects, identified as a certain Jallao, was killed at the shootout site, while his cohort, Haber Tating, was declared dead by the attending physician upon arrival at a private hospital.Jallao was driving the motorcycle while Tating was riding tandem at the time of the shootout. The ZCPO said Tating has a standing warrant of arrest for two counts of murder and is also included in the drug watch list of the Zamboanga City Police Station 9.Wounded is Police Senior Master Sergeant Ryan Mariano, a member of the Station Drug Enforcement Team (SDET) of the ZCPS9 based in Ayala village. The ZCPO said the shootout ensued as the riding-in-tandem suspects opened fire upon reaching close distance with Mariano, forcing the policeman to return fire in self-defense.The ZCPO said that Mariano was rendering New Year's Eve covered security duty when the shootout happened. The ZCPO said that intelligence reports showed the two slain suspects were deeply involved in illegal drug trafficking and were implicated in several shooting incidents that have cause distress in local communities. 'We remain steadfast in our mission to keep Zamboanga City safe. This accomplishment exemplifies the hard work and dedication of our police officers in combating crime and ensuring the safety of our citizens,' Police Colonel Kimberly Molitas, ZCPO director, said in a statement Thursday, January 2.
