Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid a visit to Port aux Basques today, pledging the federal government’s support for storm-ravaged communities hit by Hurricane Fiona.
Trudeau says the federal government will assist the provincial government with a $30 million aid package announced today and will continue to “be there” for affected residents who are homeless with winter coming. He says the provincial government is the lead, but Ottawa will be ready to assist in whatever way necessary.
In the meantime, the federal government has sent some 100-150 troops to the province to help with clean-up. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross for Hurricane Fiona relief has exceeded $10 million which will be matched, dollar-for-dollar by the federal government, bringing the total to date to $20 million.
