Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be on the southwest coast today meeting with government and speaking with people impacted by the hurricane. He toured Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island yesterday.Premier Andrew Furey, and ministers Andrew Parsons and Elvis Loveless will host a news conference from the town office in Port aux Basques this morning at 10 a.m.
Premier Furey is hopeful that the federal support being sent out to address the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Fiona will result in a specialized relief program for Atlantic Canada. Ottawa has deployed military personnel to help in the initial stages of the relief process, but now questions are being asked about whether financial support will be there as well.
Furey says the federal government has a support system in place for disasters and he has been assured by Trudeau that similar programs will be implemented again.
