The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a cyclone warning for the north-west Top End, urging residents to change Christmas routes and brace themselves for heavy rainfall.

“BOM did issue a triple cyclone warning, this is for a tropical low that is currently in the Timor Sea, out to the west of Darwin that has intensified overnight,” she said at a press conference.“We are expecting conditions to be deteriorating in those areas… Perhaps later tonight so we could see some gale force winds developing and some rainfall.”

The Monsoon trough will bring in heavy rainfall from tonight over the Daly district, extending into the Gregory and east Kimberley districts on Friday. “We’re not looking at any evacuations at the moment. The increased intensity that would be required .. the likelihood of that is not there at the moment,” he said.
