The Philippine Army's 34th Infantry Battalion successfully recovered a large cache of high-powered firearms from an unidentified armed group in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BARMM). The discovery highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and the efforts to combat armed lawless groups.
DAVAO CITY – Troops from the 34th Infantry Battalion seized 19 high-powered firearms from a lawless armed group in Barangay Lower Panangkalan, Pahamudi town in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region ( BARMM ) on January 20. Police Lieutenant Colonel Edgardo Batinay, commander of the Army 34th Infantry Battalion, reported that soldiers acted on intelligence gathered from concerned citizens about the presence of an armed group in Barangay Lower Panangkalan.
According to Batinay, upon the soldiers' arrival, the armed men fled the scene, leaving behind a cache of weaponry including M203 grenade launchers, M-16 rifles, M-14 rifles, a Garand rifle, a rocket propelled grenade launcher, bullets, and rifle telescopes. Lieutenant Colonel Rod Orbon, spokesperson for the Army 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central, stated that authorities are currently verifying reports linking the armed men to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the Dawlah Islamiyah-Mindanao. Orbon expressed relief that the raid did not result in a firefight, as it could have endangered civilians caught in the crossfire. Barangay Lower Panangkalan is situated on the outskirts of the expansive Ligawasan Marsh, a known operational area for armed lawless groups.
