The Maple Leafs later announced that Murray had been diagnosed with an adductor injury, the same injury that cost the Senators the services of goaltender Dominik Hasek in 2006. He played 20 games during the pandemic-shortened 56-game season of 2020-21. Murray had three different injuries that forced him to miss games, and he finished that season on the injury-reserve list after a collision with the Vancouver Canucks’ Jake Virtanen on April 24.
Recalled after Christmas, Murray didn’t face his former Penguins teammates in February because he had the flu. He did sit in the press box and was able to watch a video tribute at PPG Paints Arena, but then his season ended after an 8-4 loss in that game in Arizona.
