An adductor injury during the morning skate Saturday was just the latest in a string of ailments for the two\u002Dtime Stanley Cup champ.
That left Ilya Samsonov as the only goalie on the ice, and he didn’t stick around long, either, because he had to prepare to make the start against Ottawa. Erik Kallgren was recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League to dress as the backup to Samsonov.
The Maple Leafs later announced that Murray had been diagnosed with an adductor injury, the same injury that cost the Senators the services of goaltender Dominik Hasek in 2006. After being acquired by the Senators from the Pittsburgh Penguins in October 2020, Murray suited up for only 47 games. Murray missed the 2021-22 season opener with the Senators because of non-COVID illness. After her returned to action, he played twice before leaving an Oct. 23 loss to the New York Rangers following a collision with Rangers forward Chris Kreider.Article content
Matt Murray makes aa save against the Canadiens’ Brendan Gallagher in the Leafs’ season opener on Wednesday. Montreal defeated Toronto 4-3 in that contest. What took place Saturday was another reason why the Senators were willing to eat 25 per cent of the $12.5 million remaining on Murray’s contract. It just wasn’t worth it anymore to try to keep a goaltender who struggled with injuries and inconsistency.
There were those who guessed before Saturday’s turn of events that Murray would miss the game against Ottawa with an injury. It felt like what happened this scenario was predictable because this was something that played out with the Senators far too often.Article content
