Goaltender Matt Murray tweaked his groin in the morning skate on Saturday, leaving in doubt the Maple Leafs’ plans their game against the Ottawa Senators.

Ilya Samsonov will likely get the start if Murray can’t play Saturday night, but his backup is a big question.

If the Leafs training team thinks Murray is healthy enough, he could dress. If they think the problem is more serious and he is likely to miss at least 10 games in 24 days, they could put Murray on long-term injured reserve and call up Erik Källgren from the Marlies. The likely scenario: Murray will sit, and the Leafs will sign one of their University of Toronto practice goalies to an amateur tryout.

The Leafs faced a similar situation early last season when Petr Mrázek pulled his groin in the second game of the year and was replaced for one game by U of T goaltender Alex Bishop. That allowed the cap-strapped Leafs to invoke the emergency clause in the collective bargaining agreement and call up Michael Hutchison the next day.

Such a scenario would allow the Leafs to call up Källgren on Sunday, with his salary not counting against the salary cap.
