TFC head coach Bob Bradley started his best XI and then made wholesale changes in the second half.

Bradley has a handful of new players heading into the 2023 MLS regular season that he is trying to integrate into the club, including: centre backs Matt Hedges and Sigurd Rosted, goalkeepers Sean Johnson and Tomas Romero, left back Raoul Petretta, forward Adama Diomande and midfielder Vazquez. Both Johnson and Hedges were captains on their former MLS clubs. Second-year winger Lorenzo Insigne was a captain with Napoli.

“I spoke earlier about the presence that these guys have in the group — their personalities, their leadership abilities,” said Bradley in a zoom call this week. “Whenever a guy has been a captain it shows that that player was respected enough and carried leadership responsibilities. And I think on any team you need a nucleus of guys where they are working together to lead by example and I think we’ve seen good signs of that with all of these players.

The priority for the Reds’ front office in the off-season — given the fact that TFC let in the third-most goals in MLS last season — was strengthening the backline and in goal and the club certainly addressed those concerns.SBuffery@postmedia.com
