Just one of nine GBS studio albums — 2008's 'Fortune's Favour' — made it to vinyl, and it's out of print. As for whether any of the other eight will get a record reissue, band member Bob Hallett isn't optimistic. By CBNAndrew

JOHN'S, N.L. — If you want to own a copy of a Great Big Sea album on vinyl, you'll spend a good chunk of change to get it.

Great Big Sea's big years in the Canadian music scene as a premier act straddling the worlds of pop and folk music were highlighted by multiple multi-platinum albums. CDs were king in the 1990s, and Great Big Sea did well selling them. Hallett estimates the band sold 1.5-million albums over the course of their career.

So where does this leave the Great Big Sea catalogue? Their albums"Up,""Play" and"Turn" went multi-platinum and, as of 2020, were all among the Top 150 best-selling albums in Canada by Canadian artists . Given the interest amongst music fans in buying old favourites to play on their turntables, one could imagine there being pent-up demand for reissues of those albums on vinyl.

"If we were recording a record and was in mind, and we said, 'OK, while we're mastering this, we'll master it for LP.' But what we'd be in a situation is taking a CD and then remastering that for LP. You would lose a lot of that warmth and energy, the immediacy that people want to hear on a record. You would have to go back to the master tracks and remix it for that format. When we did 'Fortune's Favour,' we did it during the process.

"Plus, the cost of manufacturing for records has gone up. We're talking probably between $9 and $12 depending on the volume per album. So, it's a considerable investment, and I just don't know if the energy is there in Great Big Sea right now to do that."
