King pointed to the current situation in the U.S. where “right now, non-violent multi-cultural coalitions are having protests in different cities against police violence as most recently revealed in the very, very tragic killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tenn. Black people have experienced violence and abuse by law enforcement for centuries. What has changed is that these days nearly everyone has a cell phone camera in their pockets.

King also talked about how Black history extends to Mexico, whose second president was Black and abolished slavery, and Canada whose Underground Railroad helped many Blacks escape slavery in the U.S in the mid-1800s..“No doubt there are people in this meeting hall right now who descend from escaped slaves or those who gave them a place of refuge and safety,” King said.
