Australia’s top bosses say the introduction of multi-employer bargaining is the biggest change to industrial relations in a generation – and they’re not happy.

What is your view of the federal government’s proposed industrial relations reforms, especially multi-employer bargaining?Grouping Woodside with other industry players that have differing business models, workforces and markets has the potential to negatively impact our global competitiveness.I am very sympathetic with the intent of society more equitably sharing economic growth and wealth creation, but this is pulling on the wrong rein.

We welcome the proposed reforms to address the technical obstacles towards establishing enterprise agreements and this should be a net positive to sustained wage growth given the productivity benefits that can be realised. There are other IR reforms that could be pursued that will encourage businesses to hire more people, support participation , enable productivity and deliver sustainable real wage growth, but these seem to be put on the backburner. A key example of this is award simplification.

People in the Australian mining industry earn an average salary of $144,000, well above the cross-industry average of $95,000. The average salary for our people in Lynas is even higher than the average across the mining industry reflecting the highly skilled roles within our company. At Lynas, our people have received a pay rise every year for the past seven years, even when our company was not making a profit.

For big business, it will add complexity and challenge, but ultimately will be manageable. The more pressing issue is the impact on the SME sector. SMEs are the largest group of employers in the country and the proposed legislation represents a greater risk to this group.
