OPINION: Many business leaders are becoming worried the Albanese government is more interventionist than expected. But Canberra is confident it has the public onside.
The business community didn’t see it coming. What most business leaders believed would be a moderate, business-friendly Labor government is showing distinct signs of being far more interventionist than they had expected.
Government ministers regularly point out that other countries have been forced to undertake similar drastic action to counter the energy disaster that has unfolded this year. After months of wrangling, for example, European Union leaders are alsoBut in Australia, the government response has created rising apprehension in business about the precedent it might establish for intervention in other sectors of the economy.
Nor was the big business community keen to be closely associated with Coalition leadership that looked to have run out of steam and credibility. In turn, Coalition ministers frequentlyrather than concentrating on just running their companies well.
