The Archdiocese of Cebu has allowed three priests previously accused of child sexual abuse to resume their ministry duties after they underwent both civil and Church processes. The decision comes after a US-based watchdog listed 89 Catholic clergymen accused of sexual abuse in the Philippines.
The Archdiocese of Cebu announced on Thursday that three priests accused of child sexual abuse have been allowed to resume their ministry duties. This decision follows the publication of a list by the US-based watchdog BishopAccountability.org, which named 89 Catholic clergymen accused of sexually abusing minors in cases linked to the Philippines. Three of the individuals on the list were previously affiliated with the Cebu archdiocese.
They have now been cleared to return to active ministry after undergoing both civil and Church procedures. Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma stated that these priests were determined by competent authorities to be fit for ministry, despite the past accusations. However, their return is accompanied by continued guidance and supervision. Palma also mentioned that another priest listed by BishopAccountability.org is currently in Cebu leading a renewal program as mandated by his diocese. He emphasized that this priest has been fully cooperative with both civil and ecclesiastical authorities overseeing his situation. The Cebu archdiocese clarified that one priest on the list was laicized (dismissed from the clerical state) and another passed away years ago. Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in the Philippines (CBCP), affirmed that the Church takes the issue of child sex abuse very seriously and has established an Office for the Safeguarding of Minors to address it effectively. While welcoming the Church's efforts, Bishop Accountability co-director Anne Barrett Doyle emphasized the importance of victims reporting abuse to law enforcement to seek justice
