Protesters held signs bearing the words “Impeach Sara Now!” to express their impatience over recent political developments. The rallyists were organized by progressive party-list groups, including Magdalo and Akbayan, among others.An estimated 40,000 people are participating in the rally, according to former senator and Magdalo party stalwart Antonio Trillanes IV. At least 7,400 police officers are deployed to maintain peace and order, according to online reports.
Duterte is facing at least three separate impeachment complaints over alleged mismanagement of millions in public funds. Legislators, however, have not yet moved on any of these cases as President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. expressed his opposition to such political exercises. Earlier this month, a religious organization sympathetic to the Vice President also held a massive gathering to oppose her impeachment and call for unity among the country’s political leaders.
An impeachment complaint may only go on trial if it secures at least one-third of votes from members of the House of Representatives. The Senate, acting as an impeachment court, can impeach a sitting public official after a vote by the majority.
