, has sold more than 1 million swimsuits and raised more than $US25 million in funding, including from Jay-Z’s venture capital fund and actress Demi Moore.
A former marketer, Travis had also learnt how to be entrepreneurial. “You see a problem, you try to solve it,” she says. “I might not be a designer, but I knew this was a problem for a lot of women, and I knew it could be solved.”Andie offers sizes XS to XXXL and is available via a direct-to-consumer model where customers find their fit online and have styles mailed to them. If a swimsuit doesn’t fit, you send it back for free.
“From the beginning, I knew my limitations,” she says. “I know how to build a brand and a community. I don’t know how to make a swimsuit!” Building a team around her with design, operations, logistics and other skill sets was key, she says.“We wanted a sustainable fabric. We had been using a recycled polyester blend, but it wasn’t as breathable or as comfortable as I wanted it to be.” It took Travis 2½ years to find the nylon spandex blend she wanted.
“Lots of brands will tell you that it is ‘too hard’ to offer more sizes, and in some ways they are right,” she says. “But when I started Andie, there were three core values I wanted: inclusivity, sustainability and fit. There is nothing worse than an ill-fitting swimsuit.
