The Liberal Party lost control of its brand and of the political debate, allowing Labor to frame the election contest, according to an examination of the party’s performance at the 2022 election.

The Liberal Party lost control of its brand and of the political debate, allowing Labor to frame the election contest, according to an internal examination of the party’s performance at the 2022 election.

The reviewed did note, however, that “the only demographic class where the Liberal Party and National Party have a stronghold is in rural electorates” but “no party that is seeking to form government has a pathway to a majority solely through rural and regional electorates.” The two-party preferred vote was the weakest among young women aged 18- 34, while women aged 35-54 were the most likely segment to shift away from the Liberal Party and most likely segment to vote independent.

Poor pre-selection processes – particularly in NSW where the processes were delayed by factional disputes – an inability to attract good candidates, ill discipline and infighting also weighed the party down. A social media presence primarily focused on Mr Morrison and the Liberal Party ultimately hurt the campaign as their popularity diminished.
