NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet toured the western NSW township by air on Saturday, saying “there is a long journey ahead once we hit the peak”.
The western NSW town of Menindee, near Broken Hill, is going through “a very difficult time” as rising floodwaters look set to peak beyond the record 1976 flood levels, Premier Dominic Perrottet says.
At a meeting with the premier and emergency services minister on Thursday morning, the SES raised the issue of the lack of flood gauges in the region. Perrottet told reporters that extra gauges would have provided “more warnings and more notice for people in the local community”.“Gauges make a real difference. It’s very clear in the flood inquiry, and it is very clear to me here today, that is something the community and the SES has raised. We need more gauges,” he said.
Residents, the Rural Fire Service, and SES have been building and repairing levees around the town for more than a week to protect homes in the area.Major flood levels continue upstream at Tilpa and Wilcannia, where a prolonged peak above the major flood level is likely to continue. And downstream at Burtundy, the Darling river may exceed 7.7 metres in late January.major flooding continues in the state’s far west and southwest, along the lower Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Murray and Darling rivers.
