Scott Morrison’s unpopularity, factional brawls and falling support from women and Chinese-Australians were key drivers of the Liberal Party’s drubbing at the May election. Here is a summary.

The review pinned some blame for the party’s loss on the pandemic, which Mr Loughnane and Senator Hume said necessitated the government’s undivided attention.

This includes perceptions the government had not adequately responded to the pandemic and that Mr Morrison was not attuned to the concerns of women. “Potentially attractive candidates also became discouraged from contesting pre-selection, narrowing the options available to the party,” the review found.

Independents won a majority of support from women across all age groups, and Liberal defectors in teal seats were highly likely to agree with the statement “the treatment or attitude toward women within the Liberal Party had a strong influence on my vote”.“Polling in teal seats showed voters in those electorates had a different set of election priorities when compared to traditional Liberal-Labor contests.

“While much of the country was locked down, WA continued to operate normally, and high iron ore prices bolstered the state budget which reduced the economic ramifications of border closures.“The standing of the Labor premier improved significantly as a result, allowing him to become a major asset for Labor in the federal election campaign.”

The review said COVID-related issues, concerns around religious liberty and insufficient progress on concerns over “various cultural changes” left the Liberal Party vulnerable to challenges on its right.
