HOW many investors of conscience around the world see the suffering of former senator Leila de Lima in the hands of the justice system of her own country and are turned off mightily by the gross miscarriage of justice?

Then swear not to invest in the country, then ask colleagues in the investing community to do the same, in solidarity with the detained former senator? That will take a long time for us to know. No one has ever done a study on such causality. Most economic-oriented think tanks here are either flack for their rich principals and funders or free market zealots pushing for the usual deregulation and privatization and shrinking of the government.

Freeing de Lima will save the government money. The state, saddled with a P13 trillion plus debt, also has to contend with the battered peso, which makes both imports and debt servicing costlier. The 2023 national budget, despite the bold pronouncement from the two chambers of Congress that the country has enough development funds and funds for fresh capital expenditures, is in reality an austerity budget, not intentional maybe, but a dictate of the debt-burdened times. Savings are imperative.
