Kellie Jackson has taught about 5,200 Canberran women survival skills, from using a compact mirror to attract attention to using tampons and lip balm to start a fire.

She said the tampon could be unfurled so it became a cotton sheet and have lip balm spread over it to better ignite and act as a fire starter. She said people get lost year-round, in every state and territory, but she said it was those with the least gear who tended to get into the most trouble. Ms Jackson said while different types of outdoor activities had different risk levels, all of them required preparation.
Ms Jackson said reality TV shows like Alone had prompted a recent surge in interest in the outdoors, but just because you've seen it on a screen, doesn't mean you can put those skills into practice. She has developed a model, layering data on demographics and human behaviour on top of the fixed terrain, that can predict probability areas up to 85 per cent.
