Qantas will fill its planes from the middle, using the front and rear doors, to address slack on-time performance issues.

Airlines achieved an on-time rate of 69 per cent in June, from 74 per cent in May.Airports declined to use the pandemic as a catalyst for redistributing slots.

On Friday, Qantas said it would begin customer trials of new boarding procedures beginning next week, aimed at reducing queues and getting passengers seated quicker. The airline will board domestic flights in four sections using two doors , from the middle of the plane to the back. On Thursday, Sydney Airport boss Geoff Culbert called on the government to urgently review the slots system. Under the current rules, airlines maintain their “slots” as long as they use them 80 per cent of the time, leading to suggestions that they rotate cancellations across slots to maintain a sufficient usage level.Sydney remains the biggest source of disruptions, with cancellations highest on the Canberra-Sydney route at 9.6 per cent followed by the Sydney-Canberra route at 9.

Virgin Australia and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines cancelled the most flights in June, with 4.1 per cent and 6.9 per cent rates respectively. BITRE said Qantas and Jetstar recorded 71.4 per cent rates for on-time departures, while Virgin Australia and its regional subsidiary recorded 67.6 per cent.
