ANALYSIS: There are three concerns about the long-term effects of using the drug for weight loss.

Ozempic may be the miracle of the moment, but no one knows what is down the track because there is no long-term data for this drug when used for weight loss, and managing fat chemically can have implications for whole body health.of Ozempic and, ironically, scientists who want to run trials to determine its long-term effects can’t always secure reliable supply of the drug.Richard Gilberto

First, there’s the composition of the weight lost because – together with fat tissue – lean muscle tissue is shed too, and it’s important for metabolic function, not only during exercise, but also at rest.On stopping the drug, many people regain weight in the form of fat. This leaves them with net muscle loss.

While they are lighter than they were initially, they have a higher percentage of body fat. Paradoxically, they are lighter but fatter. Two ways to mitigate muscle loss is with high-intensity resistance training and a protein-rich diet. Those who don’t fight back are left with a loss that can become self-perpetuating and accelerate normal ageing of muscles.

Some bluntly call it “muscle failure”, saying it’s akin to heart failure, where heart function declines and reduces longevity. “A 10 per cent loss of initial body weight is associated with about a 2 per cent decrease in bone density. While this doesn’t sound like a lot, it’s associated with about a 16 per cent increase in risk of a hip fracture,” Scott says.Art of Longevity,In an online video, he says almost every patient on Ozempic has lost muscle mass at a rate that alarms him. He now requests his patients have a DEXA scan, to measure the density of their bones, before taking the drug.
