Peter Canvin met with the Hungry Jack’s founder to talk about building a business, maintaining a marriage and why he would have turned down his 25-year-old self.It is no surprise to see billionaire businessman Jack Cowin has beaten me to Catalina, the iconic harbourside restaurant in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, because he lives just round the corner.
It is a relief, though, to finally get together. We’ve been trying for a while to find a slot in his calendar after everything was put on hold for a month while he sailed around Europe to celebrate his 80th birthday with his kids and grandkids. Cowin is sipping on sparkling mineral water as I sit down, since he’ll be getting back behind the wheel of his car when we are done.
Despite being well beyond retirement age, Cowin is still the chief executive and chairman of the company he founded, Competitive Foods, the largest private restaurant franchise in Australia. It’s the stuff of legend that he opened the first KFC in Perth in 1969, then two years later opened the first Hungry Jack’s. Since then, he’s added Domino’s Pizza to his portfolio, where he is chairman and the largest shareholder.

We met when I bought an old Mercedes S-class from him in a private sale. During that transaction, we discovered a shared outlook on life and have kept in touch ever since. What has always impressed me is Cowin’s humility and the genuine interest he shows in everything and everyone around him.
