The $1.1 billion upgrade from North Sydney to Naremburn on the Warringah Freeway began last year but the 4km stretch will be under construction until 2026.
Basil Newnham's Bray Street family home is at the southern end of the Warringah Freeway but he claims the construction noise is "constant".Residents claim the nightworks on the Warringah Freeway are pumping noise into their homes."It's loud, louder than a yelling conversation in the house, louder than anything you'd have on the TV," he said."We're getting about 70 to 80 decibels inside the bedrooms," he said.
The NSW government has offered some solutions including limited double glazing for some homes and one noise-cancelling sleep mask per household. Transport for NSW's Paul McCormick said: "We periodically reach out to those residents and give them up-to-date information every four to six weeks."Warringah Freeway upgrades should be complete by 2026.
However, residents allege contractor CPB is routinely overstepping consent for noise, work notification and car parking. "They've given approval for things that haven't been followed and it doesn't seem anyone can make Transport for NSW follow their own approvals or guidelines," Newnham said."What the council wants is the minister to step in and say we will comply with our conditions of consent," North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker said.
