A talented team of young chess players from the Philippines captured the bronze medal in the rapid event of the 18th Asian Schools Chess Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand, from Dec. 1 to 11.

The team composed of Woman National Master Millery Gen Subia of Cabanatuan City, Mary Janelle Tan of Cagayan De Oro City and Elle Castronuevo of Cavite City placed third in the under-11 girls category.They finishing behind powerhouse teams India and China, which topped the rapid chess event.The competition was fierce with over 40 countries participating in this prestigious tournament.

'We are fortunate to win the bronze because it is not easy to win in this international tournament as many of our competitors are much stronger and winners in world chess cadet and world age group competitions,' said team captain Subia, an elementary student at Wesleyan University Philippines.
