Ceejay Faala, a student from Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), has received international recognition for his invention, the 'pencroscope,' a pen-sized digital microscope. Faala's research project, titled 'Learning with Innovated Microscope: Addressing Instrument Gap in Biology Class,' has been shortlisted for the 'Research Project of the Year in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics' at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia 2025.

The device engineered by Faala—a student from the Carlos Hilado Memorial State University -Binalbagan Campus in Negros Occidental—is the focus of his “Learning with Innovated Microscope: Addressing Instrument Gap in Biology Class” study.“To see our efforts acknowledged on such a prestigious international platform is both humbling and motivating,” Faala said in a Facebook post. “I am deeply grateful to my mentors, research collaborators and everyone who believed in the vision of the pencroscope.
Faala, a Secondary Education major in Science junior student, was guided by his research adviser Alberto De la Cruz in making the pencroscope using recycled materials such as scrap electrical devices. CMHSU is assisting Faala in preparing the documents for the registration of the patent for the device with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.
