Angelito 'Litoy' Giangan, a Filipino artist, has dedicated his life to sculpting Sto. Niño images. His work, which blends traditional craftsmanship with modern materials, has become a source of faith and livelihood for him and his family.
Most of the Sto. Niño images sold at stalls along D. Jakosalem St. originate from a cast sculpture created by Angelito “Litoy” Giangan, a 51-year-old artist.Litoy, who stopped his formal education after Grade 4, began honing his sculpture skills in the 1990s. In 1997, he crafted his first Sto. Niño image using a mahogany tree trunk. After working in a factory producing religious images, he eventually launched his own business in 2010 at his home in Haud Compound, Bulacao, Talisay City.
There, he began molding Sto. Niño figures using his handcrafted mahogany sculptures, along with silicon and fiber, producing images that range in price from 400 to 8,000 pesos, depending on size.Litoy became a devoted follower of the Blessed Child Sto. Niño in 1991, and since then, his craft has not only strengthened his faith but also provided a steady livelihood. His work has enabled him to support his family---his wife and two children---and assist his siblings.During the Sinulog season every January, Litoy experiences a significant increase in orders and sales due to the festival and the religious events surrounding it. He also restores old Sto. Niño images brought to him by devotees, breathing new life into these cherished figures and preserving their religious significance for future generations
