Fighter jets and attack helicopters are scrambled as North Korean drones cross into South Korea, leading to flights being temporarily suspended at two Seoul airports, a South Korean news agency says.

The drones were detected crossing from North Korea over what is known as the Military Demarcation Line above the skies of Gimpo on the outskirts of Seoul at around 10:25am , the military said. While scrambling to intercept the drones, a South Korean KA-1 light attack aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Wonju base in the country's east, a defence ministry official said.The transport ministry said flights departing from Incheon and Gimpo airports in Seoul were temporarily suspended following a request from the military.

The suspensions began at 1:08pm at Gimpo and at 1:22 pm at Incheon and lasted for about an hour, a ministry official told Reuters.The incident was the first incursion into South Korea by North Korean drones since 2017. Monday’s incident came three days after South Korea said North Korea test-launched two short-range ballistic missiles in its latest weapons tests.
