Research find some frogs in South and Central America are 'hiding' their red blood cells while why are sleeping in order to become transparent.

abc.net.au/news/glass-frogs-hiding-red-blood-cells-to-turn-transparent/101804548Some frogs found in South and Central America have the rare ability to turn on and off their nearly transparent appearance, according to a new report in the Science journal. The frogs ability to hide while sleeping keeps them safe from predatorsDuring the day, northern glass frogs sleep by hanging underneath tree leaves.

But when they wake up and hop around in search of insects and mates, they take on an opaque reddish-brown colour. She said when they were awake, they could actively evade predators, but when they were sleeping and most vulnerable they "adapted to remain hidden".Using light and ultrasound imaging technology, the researchers discovered the frogs' secret: While asleep, they concentrate, or "hide", nearly 90 per cent of their red blood cells in their liver.

Frog biologist at University San Francisco of Quito, Ecuador, Juan Manuel Guayasamin said the research "beautifully explains" how "glass frogs conceal blood in the liver to maintain transparency".For most animals, having very little blood circulating oxygen for several hours would be deadly, and concentrating blood so tightly would result in fatal clotting.
