The best prizemoney for equestrian sports is in Europe and the United States backed by the likes of Longines and Hermes. But thanks to Katie Page and Gerry Harvey, the sport in Australia just got a million dollar boost.

Having introduced one of the richest days of showjumping on the Australian equestrian calendar last January, Katie Page and Gerry Harvey have gone one better for 2023.

“To stage a world-class event on home soil attracts the best riders to Australia, and the team format makes it exciting for spectators,” says Darren Gocher, chief executive of Equestrian Australia, the governing body for elite events. The $1.45 million showjumping prize pool is funded by Page and Harvey via their Magic Millions family horse auction business. Also contributing to the pool are Tom and Sophie Magnier, who run the Australian arm of Irish-based Coolmore Stud in NSW’s Hunter Valley, and Linda and Graham Huddy of Peachester Lodge, a large thoroughbred racing facility on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.“We all have a shared love of showjumping and thoroughbred racing,” says Page.

The current Australian senior showjumping champion, 28-year-old Thomas McDermott, and young rider champion, 19-year-old Clemency Hughes, will also both be there. McDermott is based at Fernhill Estate in the foothills of the Blue Mountains; Hughes is at nearby Wilberforce. “Katie [Page] invited me to the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing in the United Kingdom in August,” Pataky tells. “It was my first taste of equestrian event travel, and I’m now hooked. January on the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions PoloZara and Mike Tindall share a laugh with Gerry Harvey at the Magic Millions raceday in January 2020, while Katie Page looks on.
