Senator Christopher 'Bong' Go highlights the need for the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to increase its presence and support for Malasakit Centers, which aim to streamline medical assistance for indigent patients.
Senator Christopher 'Bong' Go, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health , recently conducted a review of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office's ( PCSO ) role in fulfilling its mandate under the Malasakit Centers Act. He led a hearing that focused on critical gaps in medical assistance delivery, accessibility challenges, and proposed solutions to enhance services for indigent patients.
During the discussion, Go raised concerns about the reportedly limited presence of PCSO representatives in Malasakit Centers across the country. He questioned the discrepancy between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)'s 162 representatives in 166 Malasakit Centers and the PCSO's 40 representatives. He urged the PCSO to address this gap and actively contribute to the Malasakit Centers' operations, highlighting the agency's substantial revenue and financial capacity to support these efforts.Go stressed the importance of the PCSO fully complying with its obligations under Republic Act No. 11463, the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019. The law aims to streamline the medical assistance process for patients, eliminating the need to seek help from multiple offices and reducing the burden on them. He recounted his motivation for establishing Malasakit Centers, drawing from his experience witnessing patients' struggles two decades ago. He described the arduous journey patients faced, often forced to spend valuable time and resources navigating various offices for assistance. To alleviate this, he envisioned the Malasakit Center as a one-stop shop, bringing medical services closer to the people and ensuring a faster and more efficient process for accessing support.PCSO Assistant General Manager Arnel Casas assured Go of the agency's commitment to assisting all cases submitted through Malasakit Centers. However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by funding constraints, with 40 percent of the PCSO's charity fund allocated to Universal Healthcare. To address these limitations, Casas outlined the agency's initiatives, including establishing a dedicated online email address for medical assistance requests and creating plantilla positions. He emphasized their ongoing efforts to review and evaluate these positions in collaboration with department managers to improve operations and address staffing gaps
