A search is underway for a light aircraft that has been missing since Saturday morning with two people on board.

The plane - with two people on board, a pilot and a passenger - departed Gove about 8:30am on Christmas Eve and was scheduled to land in Katherine two hours later.

An air search was carried out by police and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Response Centre throughout Saturday, before continuing on Christmas Day. "Northern Territory Police together with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Response Centre are searching for a light aircraft that has not been contactable since departing Gove yesterday about 08:30am," a police statement on Sunday said.
