A Russian drone attack on a residential building in northeastern Ukraine during the night claimed the lives of at least six people and injured nine others. The Sumy regional administration reported that the Shahed drone struck the apartment building in the city of Sumy , a major hub, shortly after 1 a.m. on Thursday, causing a significant explosion that blew out a wall and surrounding windows. Rescue teams managed to pull four individuals from the debris, and a child was among the wounded.
A total of 120 residents were evacuated from the building following the incident. The Sumy Regional Prosecutors’ Office identified the victims as three elderly married couples. In response to the devastating attack, the regional administration declared two days of mourning for the city.The ongoing full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, which has raged for nearly three years with no end in sight, has resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations. Furthermore, civilians have faced immense hardships due to Russian attacks on the power grid, leaving them without heating and running water. Many have been forced to evacuate from areas along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line where Ukrainian defenses are struggling to repel the larger Russian army. Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, stated on Telegram that Russian forces have started employing Shahed drones with an increased payload of 90 kilograms (200 pounds) of explosives and metal shrapnel, aiming to “increase the number of casualties.” Yermak presented photographs of alleged Shahed warheads, showing what appeared to be small pieces of metal within a cylindrical metal casing. The battlefront in the eastern Donetsk region has witnessed particularly intense fighting in recent times. Russian forces partially occupy the region and appear determined to gain complete control in the coming months. A Russian artillery strike on the Donetsk city of Kramatorsk wounded 13 people, including two young children, according to Vadym Filashkin, the head of Donetsk region, who posted the information on his Telegram channel. Filashkin urged those remaining in the Donetsk region to evacuate immediately, stating, “Anyone who still remains in the Donetsk region is putting themselves in mortal danger.”Russia launched over 80 drones at Ukraine overnight, reported the Ukrainian air force, in what has become a common tactic during nighttime hours. Most of the drones were intercepted or disabled by electronic jamming, the air force stated. In Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, Russian drones caused damage to a hospital and two apartment buildings, as reported by Oleh Kiper, the regional head, on Telegram. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries in this incident.
