Kevin Rudd will be forced to “rebuild” bridges when he heads to Washington as ambassador with Joe Hockey declaring the former prime minister will need to rein in his public outbursts and abide by strict public service guidelines.

Former Australian Ambassador to the United States Joe Hockey said while Mr Rudd had “spent a lifetime in diplomacy” his new role would force him to abide by the strict APS and DFAT guidelines.

“I think he does have enough humility to understand there’ll be bridges he’ll need to rebuild with various parties. When asked if the new chief envoy in Washington would be “happy to carry the bags of Anthony Albanese” and other Labor cabinet ministers, Mr Hockey drew on his own experience to give some advice to Mr Rudd.“I’ll be quite interested if he does what I have to do when the minister is visiting town – make sure they get around and get all the meetings they require.

Under section 8.4.5 employees must ensure to avoid comments “so harsh or extreme in its criticism of the Government, a member of parliament from another political party, or their respective policies, that it raises questions about the staff member's capacity to work professionally”. The former prime minister has dedicated a significant amount of his post-political life leading the charge for a royal commission into media diversity and News Corp in Australia.

He has on numerous occasions also accused the Liberal Party and certain media publications of making “false and misleading” claims.
