Anthony Albanese appointed the former Labor leader, and businesswoman Heather Ridout to senior diplomatic positions in the United States.
, describing the former Labor leader as having unmatched qualifications to represent the nation’s interests in Washington.
“Dr Rudd brings unmatched experience to the role,” Mr Albanese said. “He has served as prime minister, foreign minister, held prominent academic roles and worked extensively in the United States.“I am very pleased that Kevin Rudd is prepared to do this. He’s doing as a part of what he sees as his service obligation to the country that he loves. I am sure that he will serve very well.“
“Our alliance isn’t merely grounded in our common security and economic interests, but also across generations of friendship between our peoples and our shared values of freedom, democracy and the universality of human rights.”Dr Rudd said he was excited to return to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, where he began his diplomatic career in 1981.
“I made clear that there would be occasions where we would be looking to former experienced political appointments and this was one of the posts I identified,” she said.“I cannot think of any Australian with better connections than Rudd has in the Biden administration or with more influence on geopolitical issues in DC,” he said.Former prime ministers including Stanley Melbourne Bruce, George Reid, Andrew Fisher and Joseph Cook all received diplomatic postings after leaving office.
The government also appointed Bronte Moules as Australia’s inaugural Ambassador for Human Rights, and Stephanie Copus-Campbell as Ambassador for Gender Equality.
