MANILA—Vice-President Leni Robredo on Wednesday thanked Vietnamese Ambassador Ly Quoc Tuan for his countrymen rescuing 22 Filipino fishermen that were left at sea by the Chinese near Reed Bank.
Robredo, who had visited and provided financial assistance to the fishermen, expressed gratitude to the envoy during their first official meeting at her office at the Quezon City Reception House.
"If you listen to the stories, they were really very thankful to the Vietnamese. They kept on repeating that were it not for them, they would have died already . . . Thank you on behalf of, not just on behalf of the fishermen, but on behalf of the people of the Philippines," Robredo told Ly. The Vice President and the diplomat also discussed the two countries' progress through the years, her office said in a statement.
Vietnam earlier said it was only complying with international maritime laws when its vessel rescued the Filipino fishermen.
